1,600 2012-2014 Kenworth and Peterbilt Models Recalled

BELLEVUE, WA — Truck manufacturer Paccar is recalling over 1,600 Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks model years 2012 and 2014, according to truckinginfo.

Paccar is recalling 828 2012 and 2014 model year Kenworth K300 and Peterbilt 210 and 220 chassis equipped with Sure Power-brand battery equalizers or DC converters because of a problem with an epoxy sealing, also known as a potting compound.

In electronics, potting is a way to fill the device with a solid or gel-like substance to make it resistant to shock or vibration and to prevent water and other corrosive agents from getting in.

In the case of the recalled chassis, the specific potting compound used for electrical insulation can conduct electricity after being exposed to heat, resulting in an increased risk of a vehicle fire and personal injury.

Paccar will notify owners, and dealers will replace the defective component with a new battery equalizer or DC-DC converter, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin by the end of February.

Kenworth's number for this recall is 14KWD and Peterbilt's number for this recall is 114-C.

Paccar is also recalling another 827 model year 2013-2014 Peterbilt 587 models manufactured May 8, 2012 through Oct. 24, 2013, that are equipped with Inteva-brand door pad assemblies.

Due to loose fasteners, the door pull portion of the door pad assembly may separate from the door when used. If a driver is using the door pull to help get in or out of the vehicle, the sudden detachment of the pull handle may result in a fall.

Paccar will notify owners and dealers will inspect and torque the fasteners to the correct specification, free of charge. The recall is also expected to begin at the end of February.

Peterbilt's number for this recall is 1213G.

Customers may contact Paccar at 1-425-468-7400.

Other door issues

Earlier this month, Paccar recalled 11,056 model year 2013-2014 Kenworth T680 chassis manufactured Jan. 1, 2012 through Oct. 14, 2013, and Peterbilt 567 and 579 chassis manufactured Jan. 20, 2012 through Oct. 11, 2013 for other door-related problems with the Inteva-brand door latch assemblies.

In those affected vehicles, the doors may lock permanently while closed or may be opened from the outside even after they have been locked, which may result in a driver getting stuck in the truck driver.

Kenworth's number for this recall is 14KWB. Peterbilt's number for this recall is 114-A.
