$38 Grand? That Oughtta Make Drivers Flock to Your Shop

OTTAWA — “This income,” — $38,111 a year — “may seem quite high for an occupation that does not require much schooling.”That’s the word on truck driving from the Federal Government agency Service Canada, which provides career advice to Canadians.

As recently as May, 2011, Service Canada not only reported what truck drivers make, it told Canadians that the outlook for people seeking work as truck drivers is “fair.”

“Given the expected economic growth for the Quebec, the Canada and the United States,” the agency says, “the number of truck drivers should increase significantly over the next few years.”

However, the Service Canada truck-driving story comes with a caveat. Yes, you might be able to make the “quite high” $38,111 a year, but “the average work week was much longer than for all other occupations, or 48 hours compared with 37 hours.”

Also, “long haul truck drivers are frequently away from home for long periods. People in this occupation are often required to lift fairly heavy loads.”

Service Canada’s story on truck driving is indeed one of so-called optimism. “There will be many job opportunities.

“Jobs will also be created by the need to replace people who leave this occupation to work in other occupations, such as truck driving instructors dispatchers and security guards.”

48 hours a week, Ha!, $ 38,000.00 a year what a joke! the drivers you will get for that money won't be worth a pinch of coon crap! companies will spend twice that in repairs and operating expenses incured by their lack of professionalism.i really think there is some colusion between the trucking companies pertaining to drivers wages in this province. i have bee 6 years since last increase, while taking cuts along the way! as a driver we have lost ground in the wage department, have not even come close to keeping up with inflation. all the while the fat cats are just getting fatter!!!! as for the work week, whom ever wrote this story hasn't a clue as to what we really do!

What's that $14.50 per hour? Let me get out of the way, I wouldn't want to be crushed in the tsunami of new hires as they "flock" to dispatch with their resumes in hand.

Hopefully new data will be coming in the next few months as Statscan finishes crunching numbers on the recent Census. Those numbers are from 2005, as one of the anonymous people said. Nevertheless, we thought is was an interesting write-up/breakdown of the trucking industry.

Seems a trifle arrogant at first glance. Why is it that the bureaucrats, and a sadly high number of the ignorant public think compensation for a job should depend on the amount of school you had. Most days i'd pay a plumber more for what he does than a lawyer for his skills, even tho' they deal with pretty much the same stuff.

Our drivers earn on average 78K/yr.plus benifits,Ontario only no overnights,that's with 5 years experience,over the age of 25 with a clean abstract.Not bad money.....

How can we fight this kind stupid in charge with this kind of thinking. 2381.00 a month is great money to drive!!!! How far back is there thinking, no wonder they can't keep up in today's market in trading with the world. Yup bring on more drivers who are so scared of our old roads. I survived one freaking wreck on Jan,10th and still can't go back driving yet due to stupid and now they want to flood the highways with more. They need to stop bending over and stand up straight for once. Maybe they will see the people they are screwing over in the eye, that are so tired of this kind mental breakdown in our Govt.
