DETROIT — Another bridge connecting Windsor and Detroit is in the works, but it’s not the span that has the backing of the Canadian government.

This time around Detroit has made of deal with the owner of the Ambassador Bridge, to build a privately owned and third bridge over the Detroit River, according to the National Post.

The 7-2 decision by Detroit City councilors gives three acres of park property to the Detroit International Bridge Co. in exchange for five acres of park property and US$3 million for park property improvements. Another US$2 million could later be included in the deal, if Michigan and the U.S. governments approve the transaction.

The move is the latest in a battle between the Detroit International Bridge Co. and its controversial head Matty Moroun, who have publicly denounced the construction of the publicly owned Gordie Howe International Bridge and officials in Michigan and Canada. It’s set to be completed in 2020.

The Ambassdor Bridge is reportedly the busiest international crossing in North America and handles a quarter of the trade between the U.S. and Canada.

Despite the deal between the Moroun family and Detroit, it is anything but certain if this third bridge will ever receive the required permissions to be built while the Motor City will get its money regardless.
