Alcoa’s Ultra One Wheels

Alcoa has expanded its family of what it calls “the world’s lightest heavy-duty truck wheel”, the Ultra ONE with MagnaForce alloy. New wheel sizes are 24.5 x 8.25 in., 22.5 x 14 in., and 22.5 x 9 in. The wheel is currently offered in the standard 22.5 x 8.25 size.

The new sizes will be available for order in North America on May 15, 2016.

The first Alcoa Ultra ONE 22.5 x 8.25 wheel, introduced in 2014, weighs just 40 lb and is said to be nearly 50% lighter than steel wheels of the same size.

The new 24.5 x 8.25 wheel is claimed to be the lightest and strongest wheel in its class, weighing just 51 lb, which is 3 lb less than its predecessor — the LvL ONE.

The new Ultra ONE 22.5 x 14.00 wheel comes in at 52 lb, a 2-lb reduction.

When converting from steel dual wheels and tires to Ultra ONE 22.5 x 14-in. wheels on an 18-wheeler, fleets will save more than 1400 lb.

The new 22.5 x 9.00 wheels save more than 50 lb versus a comparable steel wheel for improved productivity without sacrificing load rating. Ideal for refuse collection, logging, mining, and other heavy-haul applications, each wheel with MagnaForce alloy offers a 10,000-lb load rating.

Aluminum wheels offset the weight of mandated pollution-control equipment and can also improve fuel economy while emitting fewer greenhouse gases. Replacing steel wheels with aluminum wheels on one American 18-wheeler offsets the annual carbon footprint of an average family of four in the United States, Alcoa claims.
