Ambassador Bridge for sale? Maybe for the right price

DETROIT -- We have this bridge for sale we’d like to talk to you about.

No, really.

The Ambassador.

Between Windsor and Detroit.

Although the people who own the private bridge haven’t exactly put the very profitable structure up on Craigslist, Matthew Moroun, the head of the company that owns and operates the structure says, in effect, it’s for sale if the price is right.

In a wide-ranging interview with Detroit journalist Jeff Wattrick, Moroun says that he can’t rule out a sale.

"It’s still business," Moroun, son of company founder Mattie Moroun says.

"I’m not going to say there isn’t a number that, I haven’t thought of it, but we’d say yes to and the government could clear us out of the way and dive into a commercial business that they’re girding to do well in, hopefully."

The junior Moroun was referring to Canada and Michigan's decade-long attempts to build a second public-private span across the Detroit River, three kilometers away from the Ambassador.

The Morouns have done everything they can to try and stop the project while, over the years, governments in both countries – of liberal and conservative stripes – have been committed on seeing it through.

Canada has even offered to loan cash-strapped Michigan its half to complete the $1 billion-plus project.

In the interview, Maroun also makes predictions about the future of truck-traffic, manufacturing, and the long-term prospects for Detroit.

The full interview can be read here.
