Sterling adds 300 St. Thomas plant jobs
ST. THOMAS, Ont. (March 29, 2004) -- Sterling Trucks will increase capacity at its St. Thomas, Ont. medium and heavy-duty truck plant with the addition of 300 full-time employees, parent company Freightliner LLC recently announced. The new workers will work a three-day weekend shift, Friday through Sunday. The company intends to begin hiring for the new positions immediately. "After three very challenging years, the North American heavy-duty truck market is recovering and we have a positive outlook for continuing improvement," Freightliner president Rainer E. Schmueckle said in a press release. "We're also very upbeat about the Sterling brand, which has increased sales and market share in North America. By increasing plant capacity and employment, we are responding to the growing customer demand for Sterling trucks." The facility -- originally constructed in 1991 to build Freightliner-brand trucks, before Freightliner bought the Sterling brand in 1997 from Ford -- currently employs 1,200 people and operates two full production shifts that produce Sterling's conventional vehicles for distribution in North America and export markets.
