Michigan on verge of increasing truck speed limit
LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm will review a bill that allows commercial trucks to go 5 mph faster on state highways. The Senate this week approved the bill 25-11. It increases the allowed speed for trucks from 55 mph to 60 mph on highways where cars currently can drive at 70 mph. the raised limit would apply to trucks with a GVW of 10,000 pounds or tractor-trailers. Passenger car drivers would still drive at the 70 mph limit. Proponents say that by increasing the gap in speed between cars and trucks to the "85th percentile," traffic flow will improve and make roads safer. The bill, if signed by the governor, would take effect in nine months.
