MTO to consider more rest stops on Sault-Sudbury route
SAULT STE MARIE, Ont. -- With new hours-of-service rules set to kick-in this New Year, finding a safe spot at a rest stops along the highway is just another task a truck driver will have to take on. The Ontario Transportation Ministry may help make that job easier for truckers along the Hwy 17 corridor between Sault Ste. Marie and Sudbury, the Sault Star reports. The province's Transportation Minsiter Donna Cansfield learned about the need for more rest areas on a recent trip to the region. "If you drive from the Sault to Sudbury, at certain hours of the evening there is no-where to really get off the road," Mike Brown, MPP for Algoma-Manitoulin, reportedly told Cansfield. "It's compounded when you get along the north shore of Lake Superior. We have to do some work on that." Cansfield promised to ask the deputy transportation minister to put the issue on her agenda. There are only two areas said to be suitable for transports eastbound and one westbound on the corridor. -- from the Sault Star
