Bison's green scheme reaps rewards
DALLAS, Tex. -- Bison Transport of Winnipeg joined an elite group of 23 North American carriers recognized by the American Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) SmartWay program for proving that they can be green and make greenbacks at the same time. The companies were part of the very first SmartWay Transport Awards program, which was designed to save fuel, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and minimize air pollution from the freight transport industry. Awards were handed out today at the 2006 American Trucking Associations (ATA) Management Conference and Exhibition in Dallas, Tex. Companies that provide and/or hire freight delivery and logistics services become SmartWay Transport partners by committing to integrating cost-savings strategies such as idle-reduction technologies into regular fleet operations. Bison was recognized for effective equipment purchasing decisions as well as incorporating a special fuel management training techniques to help reduce greenhouse gas emission and fuel consumption. Bison takes a three-prong approach to training: Computer-based modules; classroom instruction and state of the art full motion simulation. This training, according to the SmartWay authorities, has helped improve fuel economy by a full three percent. Bison also uses idle controls; tractor and trailer aerodynamics, weight-reduction strategies, speed management and engine upgrades to boost fuel efficiency.
