Another rate hike from Marine Atlantic

NORTH SYDNEY, N.S. -- Truckers and passengers that rely on Marine Atlantic will be asked once again to fork over more money to get them and their goods to and from Nova Scotia and Newfoundland.

Marine Atlantic announced a new fuel surcharge of nearly 28 percent to take effect July 1, up from the 10 percent rate set April 1.

The increase affects passengers, passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles traveling between North Sydney and Port aux Basques.

The one-way fare for adults will now be $35.76, up from $28. The rate for commercial vehicles between 21 and 24 metres will be $550.39, a hike of nearly $120.

The latest increase "is a particular blow to Newfoundland," Peter Nelson, director of the Atlantic Provinces Trucking Association told local media.

That's because the Rock has some of the highest diesel prices on the continent, averaging between $1.45 and $1.55 a liter this week.
