Refinery maintenance forces fuel rationing in the west

CALGARY -- A handful of refineries in western Canada are experiencing shortages and in turn, putting some Alberta trucking operations in a tight spot.

Husky Energy, Petro-Canada, and Suncor, have all had some shortages due to scheduled maintenance or unexpected production problems and it’s shortened the supply of diesel in Alberta.

According to a report in the Calgary Herald, the Alberta Motor Transport Association said the situation is creating delivery problems.

"I haven't had any reports that the prices have gone up any more, but they are being rationed," Mayne Root, executive director of the AMTA, told the local paper. "Some of them are being rationed up to 50 percent, and you can't operate a business on half the fuel."

Husky noted the company is turning around now, but it’s still being monitored on a daily basis. Petro-Canada’s problems stemmed from excess demand during a planned routine maintenance shutdown, while an unscheduled shutdown of a Suncor hydrogen plant last month is still not operational.
