Marine Atlantic delays dropping fuel surcharge

NORTH SYDNEY, N.S. -- Marine Atlantic customers expecting a drop in fuel surcharges to mirror the drop in fuel pump prices will have to wait a little longer.

The Crown Corporation introduced a 28 percent fuel surcharge on July 1, which was up from the 10 percent increase set April 1. Sky-rocketing prices in fuel created the need for the surcharge – which was about $120 extra for commercial trucks.

Many passengers have been looking for a rate decrease as fuel prices have declined, but a 17 million liter storage facility has made the ferry service slow to react.

According to Marine Atlantic president and CEO Wayne Follett, the corporation is still running off of diesel purchased in September when fuel prices were significantly higher. Supply has to be used up before the ferry’s next fuel purchase in January.
