Ready to order? Ontario grease primed for province’s diesel

STONEY CREEK, Ont. -- A $5.6 million plant is being constructed southeast of Hamilton, Ont. that aims to turn restaurant grease into biodiesel fuel.

While the foundation is just being poured on the grounds, the owner of Sil-Tri Bio Fuels told the Hamilton Spectator he hopes production can begin in February or March.

"We plan to sell our fuel more cheaply than petroleum diesel, helping the trucking industry,” Joe Silvestri told the local paper. “We will sell on site and ship to larger trucking companies that can advertise they're going green. And we'll be paying restaurants for their oil."

The plant is designed for a maximum capacity of 19 million liters per year, but would need to time grow into the full capacity.
