BC Ferries begins phase out of fuel surcharges

VICTORIA -- For some it will seem like the gift that keeps on giving.

BC Ferries received authorization from the British Columbia Ferry Commissioner to remove the remainder of its fuel surcharge in December.

The effective dates are: Dec. 5, all minor routes and the route between Horseshoe Bay and Langdale; and Dec. 19, all major routes, Tsawwassen-Swartz Bay, Horseshoe Bay-Departure Bay and Tsawwassen-Duke Point.

Also, all BC Ferries sailings will be discounted by 33 percent for a two-month period between Dec. 1 and Jan. 31, 2009.

Fare increases by BC Ferries in April were too small to combat runaway fuel prices this summer, which resulted in new fuel surcharges in August.

The fuel surcharge raised rates by 10.3 percent on most major routes, 17.6 percent on minor routes, and 9.2 percent on the main Horseshoe Bay-Langdale route. The prices ended up costing commercial vehicles an additional 48 cents, up to $5.33 per foot.
