EDMONTON -- The Alberta government unveiled a new energy strategy, which included a timeline for renewable content in the province’s fuel supply.
According to the new Provincial Energy Strategy, content of 5 percent ethanol in gasoline and a 2 percent renewable ratio in diesel will be required by 2010.
By adopting the Renewable Fuels Standard the province expects to reduce CO2 emissions by about one million tonnes annually, and will support Alberta’s renewable fuels sector and the technology development of next generation biofuels.
A long-term action plan for Alberta to achieve clean energy production, wise energy use and sustained economic prosperity was outlined by the Government of Alberta with the release of the Provincial Energy Strategy.
“Our strategic approach going forward recognizes that 21st-century energy challenges also represent great opportunities for Alberta,” said Energy Minister Mel Knight. “The actions described in the Provincial Energy Strategy will help make Alberta a global energy leader that is recognized as world-class energy supplier, energy technology champion, and a responsible energy consumer and environmental citizen.”
Federally, a renewable fuel standard will also require 5 percent renewable content in gasoline by 2010, but the 2 percent renewable content in diesel and home heating fuel will not be required until 2012.
Subsequently, B.C. will also require renewable fuel content in its diesel supply by 2010, but on the west coast diesel will need at least 5 percent renewable content.
