Wide-base single tires first hit North American highways in late 1990s, and they've since made quite an impression for their fuel and weight saving capabilities. At first, they were compared to existing
single tires, sometimes referred to as Super Singles. Wide-base singles are not the same as Super Singles nor are they the only type of fuel-efficient tire on the market today.
They are markedly different in design, though, and what gives the tires their lower rolling resistance has also proven to be a bit of a stumbling block to wider market acceptance. On this edition of Truck
Talk, we'll dig into wide-base single tires, their advantages and disadvantages, as well as the challenges in switching an existing dual-tire-based fleet over to wide-base singles.
John Overing, product line segment manager for heavy trucks at Michelin Canada, joins Jim Park to talk about these revolutionary new tires.
