SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- After some postponement, the California Air Resources Board's emissions regulations for Transport Refrigeration Units (TRUs) is now in effect and the agency is providing Golden State-bound reefer carriers a FAQ website that fully explains the regulation and its requirements.
The TRU rule should not be confused with one of CARB's other original truck emission regs -- the Truck and Bus Rule -- which requires owners of older trucks to install diesel particulate filters on their engine power units by Jan. 1, 2011, with nearly all vehicles upgraded by 2014.
That rule is now under review after the lead scientist behind its development resigned after it was discovered he lied about the Ph.D. he held in statistics.
The TRU law requires reefers that operate in California and are older than seven years to be retrofitted with a DPF or replaced.
Answers to frequently asked questions to help truck owners makes sure they're in compliance can be found here www.arb.ca.gov/diesel/tru.htm.
CARB has also established a toll-free TRU Help Line that is available to callers during normal business hours, Pacific time, at 1-888-878-2826. Callers from outside the U.S. should call (916) 445-5516. You can also send e-mails to tru@arb.ca.gov.
