MEXICO CITY – Mexican trade authorities announced that they will impose tariffs on U.S. pork, ketchup, cheeses, some fruits until the Obama administration restores a program allowing Mexican trucks into the U.S.
According to news reports, the list includes a 5-percent levy on certain cuts of pork and 25 percent on white cheese. Onions, apples, pears, oranges, cherries -- even mineral water is subject to new tariffs.
This week, Mexico announced tariffs to a total of 99 U.S. products, up from the 89 announced last year.
The tariffs are in response to Congress' decision last year to cancel the Mexican truck pilot project established by the Bush Administration.
President Barack Obama has indicated the government has plans to restart a similar program, but the Mexicans apparently are frustrated with the length of the process.
