EDMONTON -- Cascade Carriers will not lock out 52 owner-operators after their union backed off of today's strike deadline.
The Mullen-owned carrier and the CAW had both set a deadline of 1:00 pm today for a strike and lockout.
Both parties have agreed to return to the bargaining table on Monday, Feb. 28, however.
In the meantime, the carrier will give the owner-ops drivers a temporary increase, retroactive from Jan. 1, until a long-term agreement is worked out.
The last few days have been very stressful on everyone: Management, the Union and the members alike," CAW national representative Todd Romanow told members in a memo. "The threat of a strike or lockout … had prompted various customers … to make alternate arrangements to transport their product, which had the real possibility of becoming permanent and leaving us with very little work in the future."
The union says it hopes a new collective agreement can be finalized next week and ratified soon after.
