TRENTON – An anti-idling ban for pre 2007 model trucks parked in New Jersey will kick-in next week.
Starting on May 1, an exemption that allowed sleeper berth idling will come to an end. Fits offence fines can be several hundred dollars.
The law does still permit idling for temperature-controlled cargo, and for 15 minutes if the truck is stopped in temperatures below 25 degrees for more than three hours.
The law was supposed to take effect in 2010, but the New Jersey Motor Truck Association won a delay by successfully arguing that extreme cold weather can endanger drivers in their cabs without some idling.
However, attempts to extend the exemption beyond 2011 failed.
