Orlick wheelman wins prestigious driver award

BANFF, Alta. – Allen Doell never wanted to be anything other than a professional truck driver.

As soon as he turned 18, Doell obtained his Class 1 licence and was hired right away by Alberta Steel.

Thirty-seven years and an impressive 3 million accident-free kilometers later, Doell – who has spent the last 14 years of his career with Orlick Transport of Calgary – was rewarded for his hard work, dedication and professionalism with Volvo Trucks Canada Alberta Driver of the Year honors.

he was presented with the award at the Alberta Motor Transport Association annual management meeting in Banff, Alta.

Although trucking is largely an independent job, Doell is known for his outgoing nature and the ability to form many friendships with other drivers during his years out on the highway.

In fact, once during a team operation, his co-driver asked him while leaving a truckstop: "do you know everyone in trucking?"

These days, Doell is content to drive P&D in and around Edmonton, enjoying the constant contact with customers.

He also remains busy training new drivers.

The secret to his extemporary driving record? Doell says it comes down to three things:

1. Caution – "always being aware of your surroundings. 2. Experience; and, finally,  "a good deal of luck."

He also credits much of his success to Orlick Transport, a company that has treated him "like family."
