MISSISSUAGA — The cost of ground transportation for Canadian shippers increased 1.1 percent in December over November, according to results published by the Canadian General Freight Index (CGFI).
This is the tenth consecutive monthly increase, bringing the CGFI to 8.1 percent above December 2010's result.
Accessorial charges, including fuel surcharges, are driving the increase in costs.
"During the winter months it is not uncommon to see increases in Non-Fuel Accessory Charges as a result of seasonal shipping and winter conditions” said Doug Payne, president & COO, Nulogx. “While we expect these to decline in the spring, we are continuing to monitor the impact rising fuel prices has on shipping costs” continued Payne.
The Base Rate Index, which excludes the impact of accessorial charges assessed by carriers, held steady in December versus November. Base rates have only risen .8 percent since December 2010.
