Trucking Index Drops In February, Growth Expected for Rest of 2012

NASHVILLE, IN — February's Trucking Conditions Index dropped slightly, FTR reported, to a reading of 5.9.

That reading, however, is expected to be the low point for 2012, as FTR sees strong month-over-month increases for the rest of the year as freight volumes grow at rates forecasted to be over 4 percent.

That will put pressure on available capacity, FTR said, allowing trucking companies to maintain or raise rates.

"Reasonably favorable conditions for truckers during the winter slack season bode well for later in the year, as demand increases seasonally to more normal levels," said Larry Gross, senior consultant for FTR. "We expect pricing power to remain squarely on the side of the carrier in 2012”
