Spot Market Freight Volume, Rates Rise in March

PORTLAND, OR — March freight availability and rates were up month-over-month, according to TransCore's DAT North American Freight Index.

The index was up 40 percent from February, but compared to March 2011 — when the spot market hit record freight volumes in an early spring peak — it was down slightly by 6.1 percent.

March's rates on the spot market rose for all equipment types, TransCore said, with dry vans increasing 3.2 percent from February, flatbeds gaining 1.2 percent and refrigerated vans increasing a modest 0.7 percent.

Year-over-year, spot market rates for dry vans dropped 1.5 percent, while flatbeds and reefers stayed steady.

TransCore’s monthly DAT North American Freight Index reflects spot market freight availability on the company’s network of load boards in the United States and Canada.
