FORT MCMURRAY —The newly re-elected Premier of Alberta Alison Redford says she wants to fast-track the plan to twin highway 63.
Redford made her announcement about a week after an April accident that claimed seven lives, but six years after the government first announced that it would pave the 240 km stretch. Since the original plan was announced in 2006, only 18 klicks have been twinned.
According to local media, Premier Alison Redford says she was deeply saddened by the two-pickup-truck crash, and it has made her more determined than ever to see the widening take place.
“I have asked our department to take a look at what an accelerated schedule will look like,” the premier said. “I think it is a priority to move ahead with that.”
Currently, the province plans to twin another 36 km by the end of next year.
Between 2005 and 2009, 46 people have been killed and dozens more injured on the highway.
