TORONTO (Jan 5, 2000) -- The Ontario government said it invested $692 million in safety and operational upgrades to provincial highways in the 1999 construction season, more than it has ever spent on roads in any one year.
The improvements spanned more than 2000 lane-kilometres of improved and upgraded highways, 11 new bridges, and 62 reconstructed bridges and overpasses. Among the upgrades is the addition of paved shoulders and rumble strips to Hwy. 401 between London and Windsor, a stretch notorious for a series of collisions during the past year.
The capital construction projects are part of the Government of Ontario's SuperBuild Growth Fund, a five-year, $20-billion partnership capital fund established to renew Ontario's infrastructure and build for the future.
