BC Truckers Concerned Terminal Closure Will Reduce Capacity
NANAIMO, BC — Truckers are worried that closures at the Duke Point terminal in Nanaimo will reduce capacity, reported the Vancouver Sun today.
After a vessel crashed into the dock this past week, BC Ferries announced closure of the busy terminal, and have rerouted all Duke Point traffic to Departure Bay, 20 minutes north in Nanaimo.
Deborah Marshall, spokeswoman for BC Ferries, said that the Departure Bay terminal will be busy as it handles two routes. Traffic lanes have been set aside for commercial traffic in Departure Bay, as they were at Duke Point, she told the Vancouver Sun.
Louise Yako of the BC Trucking Association said that their members haven’t reported any significant delays, but will continue to monitor the situation.
"We will be interested in knowing what the long-term mitigation strategy is while they are reconstructing the Duke Point dock," Yako said.
