Border Agents No Longer Allowed On Safety Blitzes

TORONTO- Ontario’s Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca has cut ties with the Canadian Border Service Agency (CBSA)and has said that “effective immediately the ministry will no longer partner with the [border agency] in commercial motor vehicle enforcement initiatives.”

The announcement comes after CBSA officers arrested 21 people on immigration violations during a joint commercial vehicle safety blitz conducted in August in the Wilson Ave. area between Jane St. and Highway 400 in Toronto. The ministry of transportation was heavily criticized by mainstream media afterwards.

At the time, todaystrucking.com alerted truck drivers that the province of Ontario was using roadside checks not only to check their vehicle’s safety, but may also require their personal identification information and to have all their paperwork ready to go to avoid delays and possible detention.

Del Duca has since said that moving forward, “the ministry will only partner on joint enforcement initiatives with road safety partners to protect and ensure road safety and commercial carrier compliance.”
