OTTAWA — The Canadian Trucking Alliance has named the 2012 CTA/Volvo Trucks Canada National Truck Driver of the Year.

The award went to Quebec trucker Pierre Laflamme with Groupe Boutin, based out of Boucherville, Que.

But Laflamme wasn’t awarded solely for having over 8-million accident-free kilometers or for decades of professionalism.

It was for his ability to inspire and his dedication to improving industry standards.

Laflamme, also the 2011 QTA Driver of the Year, was the unanimous choice from a judging panel made of industry experts from groups which include Transport Canada, Canada Safety Council and Traffic Industry Research Foundation.

He’s a trustworthy mentor to new drivers, CTA explained, one who takes the time to guide each rookie and answer their questions thoughtfully, while helping them improve their skill set. For Laflamme, helping colleagues, both on and off the road, is a way to elevate safety standards in the industry.

On top of company safety accolades, he also placed second in the regional Truck Driving Rodeo, noted CTA. “His impressive driver fitness level is demonstrated by the fact he hasn’t had a single traffic infraction in the last 13 years – no small feat for someone who hauls 200,000 km a year across North America.”

And he’s the kind of driver who doesn’t hesitate to stop on the side of the road to help other drivers in distress, said co-workers, one who will do whatever he can to get motorists and drivers back up and running.

Pierre embodies the values of professionalism, passion and respect that make our industry proud,” said Marc Cadieux, CEO of the Quebec Trucking Association (QTA). “He is a role model and an exemplary source of inspiration for any present or future driver.”

That ability to inspire is what makes the difference between a good teacher and an outstanding teacher, Laflamme’s colleagues said.

And in his down time? Laflamme is back on the road, riding his motorbike with friends and family.
