Canadian Freight Index Keeps Going Up and Down

TORONTO — There was a 7 percent slip on TransCore Link Logistics’ Canadian Freight Index in June, continuing the “the up and down results for the first six months of the year,” TransCore reported today.

Compared to last year’s peak in the same month, June 2013 was 21 percent lower.

“Second quarter saw a slight gain of six percent over the first quarter of 2013; however, volume was down 17 percent compared to elevated second quarter results of 2012,” TransCore noted.

Equipment postings in June stayed flat once again, but month-over-month levels saw a slight one percent gain while load postings were 12 percent higher than last year’s level for the same period.

Meanwhile, equipment-to-load ratio increased in June to 2.37 from May’s 2.18

Dry Vans: 51 percent

Reefers: 23 percent

Flatbeds: 19 percent

1. New York

3. Pennsylvania

June’s cross-border loads destined for provinces within Canada were three percent higher than May, and accounted for 74 percent of overall volume. On the flip side, intra-Canada postings were three percent below May levels, and contributed to 21 percent of June’s total volume.
