Close town trucking to outsiders: Truro politicians

TRURO -- This central Nova Scotia community is toying with the notion of making it mandatory for the municipal government to use only local truckers on town contracts.

According to the Truro Daily News, local politicians have requested the staff at Colchester County to study the pros and cons of such a rule.

In its initial report to council, the staff came out against limiting competition to local truckers.

"Staff are of the view that imposing a mandatory requirement to use the [local] truckers’ association would limit competition and is likely to cause an increase in prices relative to a tendering process that does not impose restrictions of this nature," the report states.

Undeterred, councillors sent the staff back to do more homework on the matter and postponed making a decision for at least two months.

Councillor Bill Masters said regardless of the final outcome, whoever gets the bids should be told they’re expected to hire local help if they can.

Wherever possible, he said, it should be made known "that the people that get our tenders know darn well that we want these people to do our work."

Yes sir, now here's a city council with about 50' of foresight. if every jurisdiction in North America followed their lead truckers could be home with their families every night. Now we just need these "wisemen from the east" to figure out how to keep the country's freight moving. I'm looking forward to this spreading!!!

Oh great, now the local guys who buy liquor and ladies for the local politicians will pay inflated prices for the truck services, and leave the municipality high and dry when they really need them.
