Collisions unchanged, but fewer fatalities reported in NS

HALIFAX — Highway fatalities dropped 16.2 percent in Nova Scotia last year, compared to 2007, but the number of crashes remained virtually unchanged.

The province’s transportation department recorded 76 fatal collisions that caused 83 fatalities, compared with 79 fatal collisions and 99 fatalities in 2007.

Transportation officials attribute the decline to various new safety measures adopted by the province in 2008, including a ban on hand-held cellphones and text messaging while driving, and the Alcohol Ignition Interlock Program for people who lost their diver’s licence, and doubling the fines for speeding in work zones.
