Customs officials promise “soft enforcement”
OTTAWA (Jan. 12) — For now, Canadian customs officials are in a mode of “soft enforcement” regarding the switch from generic PARS bar codes to the 2ITNPARS coding system.
Revenue Canada Customs officially discontinued distributing generic PARS bar codes to carriers hauling commercial goods into Canada starting Jan. 4.
Officials with the Release Policy Section, Import Process Division, issued a notice (N-261) saying the department “will exercise a reasonable period of administrative tolerance so that carriers can adjust to the new policy. However, following this period, we will begin monitoring PARS release information to determine improper use of 2ITNPARS carrier codes. Consistent misuse of 2ITN carrier codes will result in release information being rejected.”
Customs brokers may continue to print and distribute 2ITNPARS bar codes exclusively for the use of itinerant carriers with whom they do business, the department said.
Revenue Canada introduced the change from PARS bar codes last summer.
