Deck the hauls: What Santa shares with truckers

INDIANAPOLIS – If you don’t already see a direct link between what Santa does and what truckers do, here’s a chance to remind yourself and others.

In honor of the drivers who tirelessly transport goods throughout the Christmas season and the rest of the year, Driver Solutions (http://www.greatcdltraining.com), a career-management company for the trucking industry, has created an online video titled "’Twas The Night Before Christmas – Trucker’s Edition."

And it is, by every measure, very cute.

The video, which runs for two minutes and five seconds, poses the question that has stumped philosophers for decades, and that is, “Could Santa Claus be the most well-known truck driver?”

The idea belongs to Kylee Wall, a producer for Driver Solutions, who was working on a project to represent a day in the life of a trucker when the spirit of the holiday season inspired her.

She wrote her own version of the Christmas classic, likening Santa’s one-night around-the-world delivery trip to the regular truck driver’s daily routine.

"Yes, Santa Claus steers eight grass-chomping reindeer instead of a diesel-powered 18-wheeler, and he’s seated in a sleigh, not a cab," said Wall. "But what he does is strikingly similar to a professional truck driver."

Except by all accounts, Santa is not going to have to reduce his driving time next year, or install an Electronic On-Sleigh Recorder.

Meanwhile, like St. Nick, truckers also embrace the spirit of giving.

Every year Edmonton-based Rosenau Transport, for example, rolls out its 18 Wheels of Christmas campaign in which the company rolls out a decked-the-halls-out tractor-trailer to pick up and deliver perishable goods to the local food bank.

This year, Lethbridge-based H&R Transport’s staff collected and delivered 80 gifts for patients in the children’s unit at Chinook Regional Hospital.
