Staples and magazines make beautiful music together
PLAINFIELD, ONT - - Unlike most tykes her age, when 14-month old Jaidyn Staples hears the word "dolly" she’s more apt to think of landing gear on a 53-ft van than of a cuddly playtoy that says "mama" when you pull a string.
Because her dad, Derek Staples, is teaching her to read using Today’s Trucking magazine.
“I’ve got copies all over my desk,” Staples told todaystrucking.com.
“She points and pays attention and laughs and tries to say truck. It's so cute.” (Believe it or not, this story is NOT an ad for the magazine. It’s about a fascinating character in the industry who just might help you improve your business. Read on.)
When Staples saw our list of the 50 Best Truckin’ Songs of All Time, he created a fleet of - - we hope you’re sitting down -- singing trucks, with something for every musical taste: The repertoire included CCR’s - Long As I Can See The Light: The Beatles’ Long and Winding Road; John Denver’s Country Roads, Red Sovine’s Truck Driver’s Prayer and Bob Seger’s Turn the Page.
Then came this masterpiece: a shout-out to Today’s Trucking sung by a three-rig convoy consisting of Cat, a Pete, and International ProStar, doing a C.W. McCall classic.
Staples has been fascinated with trucking ever since he was a kid in Quebec’s Eastern Townships and his savoir faire around computers comes from years working as a broker and in various other jobs around trucking admin.
Another of his projects: This astonishing and up-to-date list of more than 1,800 carriers around the world.
“It’s free to check out and use,” he says. “It’s like a load board built on an Excel file. You can sort it in all kinds of ways. It’d be great for carriers who maybe would like to partner or interline with somebody, or if you’re a driver looking for work, you’d find it very helpful.”
“I like to help people,” the affable Staples told us, “and that’s why I created the song for Today’s Trucking. The truth is, I can make any truck sing.”
You can also find the affable Derek Staples through his carrier-procurement website or on LinkedIn.
For our part, we at www.todaystrucking.com think that any guy named “staples” who uses our magazine (Get it? Staples? Magazine?) to teach his daughter to read deserves the Order of Canada.
