Diesel Prices Bounce Back Slightly in Canada, U.S.

LONDON, ON AND WASHINGTON, D.C. – Prices for diesel fuel bounced back in both Canada and the U.S. while gasoline moved lower.

The average Canadian price for diesel inched up $0.008 over the past week to $1.029 per liter, following two straight weekly drops totaling $0.015, according to the petroleum information services provider The Kent Group Ltd.

The current price is the highest in three weeks but remains $0.25 less per litter than the same time last year.

Prices increased in all four of Canada’s different regions from last week with the biggest happening in the Atlantic Provinces, adding $0.024 to $1.05 per liter. Increases in the other regions were generally much smaller with Quebec averaging $1.089, Ontario at $0.995 and the Western Provinces averaging $1.047.

In contrast the average Canadian cost of regular grade gasoline fell $0.012 over the past week to $1.057 per liter, following an increase of about half the number the week before. This marks the lowest level since late February and is $0.223 less than this time in 2014.

South of the border the average cost of gasoline lost US$0.004 over the past week for an average of US$2.318 per gallon, according to the U.S. Energy Department’s Energy Information Administration. This follows a US$0.005 decline the week before and is US$0.981 less than a year earlier.

Meantime, trucking’s primary fuel increased for the first time since early September in the U.S., picking up $0.016 from last week for a nationwide average of US$2.492 as prices moved higher in the Midwest, Rocky Mountain and West Coast regions.

Over the past four weeks diesel shed US$0.058 but remains US$1.214 less than during this week in 2014 despite this weekly increase.
