MONTREAL — Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada (Quebec), announced today that plans are in the works to start construction on a new bridge across the St. Lawrence.
"Building a new bridge across the St. Lawrence is vital to the economic growth of Montreal and the region, and is beneficial to Canada as a whole," Minister Lebel said.
Pre-feasibility and assessment studies have already been conducted and reviewed. The next step, says the government, is to meet with various partners to determine the way forward.
A public-private partnership to avoid squeezing taxpayers is not out of the question, and neither are tolls.
Quebec's role has yet to be defined.
