Humber Students Buckle Into a Trucking Career

Toronto- Trucking companies are always looking for professional drivers and a few carriers are now taking a peek at Humber’s students during the college’s Trucking Career Day, held at the Humber Transportation Training Centre.

On Wednesday, October 1, 2014, from 6 to 9 p.m., students and the general public will get the chance to meet face-to-face with industry representatives from Schneider National, Canada Post, Gordon Food Service, Kriska, Iron Mountain, GFL Environmental, and others.

Participants will get behind the wheel of a commercial vehicle, interact with Humber driving instructors and talk to industry employers about employment opportunities and the qualifications needed for a career in trucking.

“The current high demand for commercial drivers has had a positive effect in increasing wages and benefits,” said Rick Mikula, program liaison officer at Humber. “Many employers have introduced signing bonuses, tuition reimbursement programs and other incentives as a way of attracting drivers. Many of our graduates are employed within weeks of completing the program and can earn a starting wage of anywhere from $45,000 to $55,000 a year.”

Humber offers commercial driver driving for licence class G to AZ (tractor-trailer), G to DZ (straight truck), and DZ to AZ (tractor-trailer from straight truck licence).
