NEW ORLEANS, LA — Navistar International won both categories in the American Truck Dealers’ 2014 Commercial Truck of the Year competition with its ProStar heavy-duty and TerraStar medium-duty models.

During its annual convention in New Orleans, ATD announced that the International ProStar with Cummins ISX15 engine with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) was named 2014 Heavy-Duty Commercial Truck of the Year and the International TerraStar 4x4 was named 2014 Medium-Duty Commercial Truck of the Year.

Trucks were judged by a panel of journalists, including Today’s Trucking Contributing Editor, Jim Park. The Truck of the Year is picked based on a number of criteria including innovation and design, safety and driver and owner satisfaction.Competitors were Kenworth’s T880 vocational truck with a Paccar MX-13 engine and Peterbilt’s Model 579 tractor, also with an MX. The medium-duty nominees were Hino’s 195h Double Cab hybrid, Kenworth’s K270 low-cabover and Peterbilt’s Model 220 low cabover.

The judges drove each truck in the same conditions and the same place and considered each truck on its own merits rather than rating one truck against another.

The International ProStar daycab tractor was re-introduced in December 2012 with SCR.

Judges said its maneuverability and the engine’s power contributed to its high score. The ISX15 engine offers ratings up to 550 hp and 1850 lb ft of torque, and has “enhanced response and control,” Navistar claims.

Navistar’s sales pitch is that the ProStar is a “driver’s truck” with features such as a one-piece, aerodynamic wraparound windshield, sloped hood and lower placed instrument panel to give drivers a good view of the road.

The TerraStar 4x4 gives work truck buyers “high strength, low-allow frame rails at 80,000 PSI and includes a service transfer case from Fabco, a leader in all-wheel drive transfer cases and steer-drive axles for medium and heavy-duty vehicles,” Navistar states.

The TerraStar, a 4x4 crewcab model is powered by the 300 hp, 660 lb ft 6.4 liter MaxxForce 7 engine and pulls a heavy trailer well, according to the judges. What’s more, the truck has a tilt hood for easy access to the engine, has a spacious interior and is fun to drive, the judges said.
