				Lakehead Declares State of Emergency: Dawson Road Provides Sole Access

				<p>THUNDER BAY &mdash; A primary sewage-treatment plant backed up here last week, several hundred homes have been flooded, the City has declared a State of Emergency, and the only way trucks headed west or coming from the west can travel is via Highway 102; a.k.a. Dawson Road.</p>
<p>Authorities believe the other route west; i.e., the Trans-Canada, won&rsquo;t be open until Friday of this week.</p>
<p>The sewage-treatment plant backed up on May 27 after 100 cm of rain fell; the closure of the Trans Canada coincides with an ongoing debate in the city over the possible banning of trucks from Dawson Road. Some residents have petitioned the City to ban big trucks from Dawson and a series of meetings have been taking place; the next is scheduled for July.</p>
<p>All trucked freight moving across Canada must travel through Thunder Bay.</p>
<p>And according to an emergency-flood worker, although there are some side roads around the flooded Trans Canada, the only truck route available is the debated Dawson Road.</p>
