NAFTA Trade Strong, U.S.-Canada Truck Freight Unchanged Y/Y

WASHINGTON, DC — NAFTA freight totaled $100.6 billion in August, increasing 4.4 percent from the same time a year ago and marking the sixth consecutive month it exceeded $100 billion.

U.S. freight movements with Canada and Mexico saw imports increase 3.6 percent while exports gained 5.2 percent from a year earlier, according to the U.S. Transportation Department.

Of the $4.2 billion increase in the value of US-NAFTA freight from August 2013, truck freight contributed the most at $1.9 billion, followed by rail at $514 million.

Trucks carry three-fifths of U.S.-NAFTA freight and are the most heavily utilized mode for moving goods to and from both U.S.-NAFTA partners, transporting 59.6 percent of U.S.- Canada and Mexico freight in August.

U.S.-Canada Freight

Year-over-year, the percent in the value of U.S.-Canada freight moved by truck remained essentially unchanged.

Trucks carried 53 percent of the freight to and from Canada, followed by rail at 16.4 percent, pipeline at 12.8percent, vessel at 7.1percent and air at 4.3 percent. The surface transportation modes of truck, rail and pipeline carried 82.2 percent of the total U.S.-Canada freight flows.
