New Brunswick eases restriction on rear-drag devices

MONCTON, NB – New Brunswick will allow trucks to use full-length aerodynamic boat tail devices, says ATDynamics, whose TrailerTail is now legal in that province.

New Brunswick announced Nov. 25 that it will ‘defer enforcement’ against the devices until legislation can be written that specifically allows them.

The province will be the third where use of the aerodynamic fins is effectively legal. Ontario has enacted a similar deferred enforcement policy. Nova Scotia has implemented a permit system.

The remaining provinces are currently reviewing their interim policies.

Moncton, N.B.-based Keltic Transportation has announced that it will deploy 90 of the aerodynamic devices within its fleet by the end of 2014.

“Reducing the environmental impact of our operations through reduced fuel consumption was the primary driver of our investment,” said Mike Clements, vice president of corporate operations at Keltic Transportation.

“We are early technology adopters and are keen to implement technology which gives us competitive advantage and adds value to our customers by keeping their shipping costs as low as possible.”
