New Brunswick Hwy Twinning Project Ahead of Schedule

BEDFORD, NS  The highway-twinning project between Saint John and the U.S. border will wrap up six months ahead of schedule. A 17 kilometer section of the highway, from Bethel and Waweig, will open on July 17.

According to reports, the three-year, $540 million project was supposed to be completed in July 2013, but Dexter Construction, says it will finish ahead of schedule.

The Department of Transportation is refusing to confirm the progress and officials continue to say the completion date for the twinning remains to be next July, according to the CBC.

Imelda Gilman, president of the Saint John Board of Trade, was at the public meeting when Harry Varjabedian, senior executive of Dexter Construction, announced the new timeline for the project.

Gilman told the CBC she was pleased to hear the project would be finishing ahead of schedule because the bulk of New Brunswick’s exports come from the greater Saint John area.

“I thought it was very ambitious. I’ve driven that road over the last number of months and there’s so much activity all the way down to the border,” Gilman said.

In addition to twinning the highway, Dexter Construction will also operate and maintain it until 2040.
