New MitFuso Canter comes across the pond

LOGAN TOWNSHIP, N.J. – The new Fuso 2012 Canter FE Series medium-duty trucks have arrived from Japan at ports in Baltimore, Jacksonville, San Diego and Tacoma.

So far, about 850 trucks have landed on American shores, with more scheduled to arrive in the coming weeks, says Mitsubishi Fuso, which is owned by Daimler Trucks.

Long successful in Japan and doing well in Europe, the Canter comes to North America with an extensively redesigned chassis, cab and fuel-efficient diesel.

Models include standard chassis designs — the FE125, FE160 and FE180 — plus a 7-passenger crew cab model, the FE160CC, and the only 4-wheel-drive medium-duty cabover in the industry, the FG4X4.

No word yet on when the hybrid version will be available in North America.
