Volvo Trucks offers crawler gears in two new I-Shift transmission models for applications demanding very slow speeds and maneuverability.

For both vocational and on-highway applications, they provide crawler functionality for concrete mixers with curb-pouring capability, asphalt paving, and other low-speed tasks, as well as improved startability for heavy haul. They also offer GCWs up to 220,000 lb or more based on application approval.

The new I-Shift will be available in two versions, one with 14 forward gears, including a low crawler (19.38 ratio) and an ultra-low crawler (32.04 ratio) with an overall ratio of 41.08. The other has 13 forward gears, including one low crawler (17.54 ratio) with an overall ratio of 22.35. Both will be available in overdrive configurations.

The gears and other hardware have been hardened to withstand frequent shifting in rugged conditions. The transmission has had other updates to improve shift performance and overall durability.

All I-Shift transmissions also get a revised countershaft design that helps enable faster shifting while new software enhancements – Volvo’s I-See predictive cruise control feature – can help improve fuel efficiency by learning and adapting to the road.
