SARNIA, Ont. -- Rather than calling the Ontario Provincial Police to get a handle on Hwy. 402 traffic leading up to the Blue Water Bridge, police say drivers should go to the web instead.

The public can now access photos showing real-time traffic congestion on Hwy. 402 by clicking a link on the Ontario Minsitry of Transportation's website.

Nine cameras installed by the MTO between the bridge and Mandaumin Rd. snap a still photo every three to five minutes. The pics can be viewed at www.mto.gov.on.ca (link below).

The Ministry installed the cameras and other intelligent transportation systems after a series of crashes on the stretch leading to the border crossing. Many of the incidents involved stopped or slow-moving trucks.

The OPP says the cameras will reduce the number of phone calls it takes from people wanting updated info on traffic backups, which ties up their phone lines.
