DELRAY, Mich. -- The government consortium charged with selecting the location for a new bridge between Windsor and Detroit says a proposed site in the impoverished southwest suburb of Delray would cause the relocation of up to 414 and over 50 businesses.

Although an official decision won't be made until April, an environmental impact statement draft released yesterday by The Detroit River International Crossing (DRIC) study says Delray is a preferred location because it would be less intrusive than an alternative plan closer to the Ambassador Bridge, according to the Detroit News.

While many homes would be impacted, the study points out that a new bridge in the region would create 25,000 spin-off manufacturing jobs.

In a presentation before Detroit City Council, DRIC said the bridge would cost between $1.3-$1.5 billion.

Community leaders told council they would prefer the bridge being built elsewhere, but admitted that there's hope the bridge could eventually have a positive economic impact on the troubled neighborhood, according to the paper.
