LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm says she supports a bill passed by Senate Transportation Committee to raise the state diesel fuel tax from 15 cents to 19 cents a gallon.

The additional tax fee revenue would go to repairing deteriorating roads and bridges.

The cash-strapped state has been looking for new revenue streams to make up for budget shortfalls in several areas.

Granholm said she hopes it's possible for the increase to get Senate and House approval in the coming week. "We should get it done now."

Four cents on the gallon isn't an exorbitant hike, but it still comes at a bad time for truckers struggling to find decent-paying freight around the Rust Belt and southern Ontario.
