No more fuel surcharge on BC Ferries

LANGLEY, B.C.- B.C. Ferries has removed its 3.4 percent fuel surcharge, thanks to decreasing prices for diesel fuel, according to the B.C. Trucking Association.

BC Ferries had introduced this fuel surcharge, originally at 3.5 percent, on January 17, 2014.

BC Ferries added the fuel surcharge at time of payment, so the change is reflected on receipts rather than the fare index.

Over the years, BC Ferries has had fuel surcharges, fuel rebates and periods of time with neither, all based on the market price of diesel fuel. BC Ferries says that it utilizes fuel deferral accounts as a tool to help mitigate the impact that fluctuating fuel prices has on the cost of ferry travel.

BC Ferries still has an outstanding balance in its fuel deferral account, but the remainder continues to drop and forecasts indicate that the balance will be reduced to zero in the first half of 2015.
