HALIFAX -- For the first time in nearly two decades, Nova Scotia bridge officials plan to raise tolls on the Angus L. Macdonald and A. Murray MacKay bridges.
Halifax Harbour Bridges filed an application with the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board this week to raise truck tolls by as much as 34 cents per axle, starting in 2011.
Truckers using MACPASS would pay 29 cents more.
Tolls were last increased in 1992.
"The bridges are very well maintained, yet as they age, they become more expensive to maintain," general manager and CEO Steve Snider said.
He also said the suspended span of the Macdonald Bridge will be replaced in the next four years, at an estimated cost of $137 million.
